How do I choose the right primary category for my business?

Short answer

Pick the single category that most precisely describes what you do, not the broadest one that covers everything. Your primary category is one of the strongest ranking signals on a Google Business Profile, because it largely decides which searches you are eligible to appear for at all. Secondary categories add reach, but the primary one does most of the work.

Why the primary category carries so much weight

It tells Google what kind of business you are. Relevance is judged before anything else, so if the category is wrong, strong reviews will not rescue you.

If someone searches for an emergency plumber and your primary category is set to Contractor, you may not be eligible for that result at all, regardless of how good the rest of your profile is.

Specific beats broad

Most businesses choose the widest category, assuming it captures more searches. It does the opposite. A broad category makes you a weaker match for every specific search.

Choose the category that matches the work you want more of, not simply the work you happen to do most of today. If implants are the goal, the category should reflect that.

Find out what the businesses above you use

The companies ranking above you are visible, and so are their categories. If the top three all share a primary category you do not have, you have found your answer.

You can inspect a profile directly, or use a browser tool that surfaces categories. Either way, do this before guessing.

Secondary categories are useful, but secondary

Add the services you genuinely offer. They widen your reach without diluting the primary category.

Do not add categories for work you do not actually do. It breaks Google's guidelines and is a common route to a suspended profile.

Changing it safely

A primary category change can move your rankings within days, in either direction.

Change one thing at a time and note the date. If you rewrite the whole profile in an afternoon and rankings shift, you will have no idea which change caused it. Give it two weeks before judging.

How many categories should I have?

One primary, plus only the secondary categories you genuinely offer. More is not better. Every irrelevant category weakens how clearly Google understands what you are.

Will changing my primary category hurt my current rankings?

It can move them either way, which is why it is worth changing deliberately rather than experimentally. Note the date you changed it so you can attribute what happens next.

Can I use a category my competitor uses if I do not offer that service?

No. Listing services you do not provide breaks Google's guidelines and is one of the more common causes of suspension. The short-term gain is not worth the profile.
