Why isn't my business showing up on Google Maps?

Short answer

Search your exact business name first, because that single test splits the problem in two. If nothing appears at all, the profile is unverified, suspended, or being suppressed by a duplicate. If it appears for your name but not for what you actually do, it is a ranking problem, and the causes are usually primary category, proximity, or weak review activity. The fixes for those two situations have nothing in common, so identifying which one you have comes before changing anything.

Key points

  • Searching your exact business name splits the problem in two: a visibility problem or a ranking problem.
  • Google Business Profile signals carry roughly 32% of local pack ranking weight, the largest single block, according to Whitespark's Local Search Ranking Factors.
  • How far your visibility reaches depends on population density. In a dense city centre you can fall out of the map pack within a mile or two; in rural areas Google may show results from 15 miles away.
  • Verification timing depends on the method: phone and email finish in minutes, a video review takes up to 5 business days, a postcard takes 5 to 14 days.
  • Checking your own ranking from your own premises tells you almost nothing, because map results are personalised to the searcher's location.

How do I tell whether it is a visibility problem or a ranking problem?

Search your exact business name together with your town. What comes back sorts the problem into one of two categories, and almost everything else follows from which one you are in.

If nothing appears at all, you have a visibility problem. The profile is unverified, suspended, or a duplicate listing is absorbing it. No amount of optimisation helps until that is resolved.

If your profile appears for your business name but not when you search the service you provide, you have a ranking problem. The profile is live and Google knows it exists. It is simply not being judged the best answer for that search.

Why does my Google Business Profile not appear even when I search my own business name?

Three causes account for nearly all of these, and they are worth checking in this order.

  • Not yet verified. The profile exists in your dashboard but Google withholds it from public results until verification completes. Timing depends entirely on which method you were given.
  • Suspended. Look for a notice in your Google Business Profile dashboard. A suspension needs a formal appeal, and appealing before you fix the underlying violation usually makes things worse.
  • A duplicate listing. Two profiles for the same business can suppress each other. Search your business name with your address, then search your phone number on its own, to find the second one.

How long does Google Business Profile verification take?

Verification time depends on the method Google assigns you, which is based on your business type and what data it already holds about you. You do not usually get to choose.

Verification methodTypical time to complete
Phone or emailMinutes
Video recording reviewUp to 5 business days
Postcard by mail5 to 14 days
Live video call2 to 3 business days to schedule

Why does my business rank for its name but not for my service?

This is a ranking problem, and it usually traces to one of three things.

The first is your primary category. If it does not match the search being run, you may not be eligible to appear for that search at all. It is the most common cause and the quickest to fix.

The second is proximity, which you cannot change and can only work around. The third is prominence: a thin or stalled flow of reviews, few citations, and a website that says little about what you actually do.

Where you spend effort should follow the weighting. Whitespark's Local Search Ranking Factors puts Google Business Profile signals at roughly 32% of local pack weight, the largest single block, ahead of on-page signals at about 19% and review signals at roughly a fifth. If the profile itself is incomplete, website work will not compensate for it.

How far away from my business do I still show up on Google Maps?

Map results are personalised to the searcher's GPS position, which is why checking your own ranking while standing in your own premises tells you very little.

How far your visibility extends depends heavily on population density. In a dense urban area where fifty competitors sit within a mile, your position can slide from first to outside the pack entirely across a mile or two. In a rural area, Google may pull results from fifteen miles away or more, simply because there is nothing closer to offer.

The practical consequence is that a single ranking check is close to meaningless. Run the same search from two or three points spread across your service area before drawing any conclusion about whether you rank.

What should I check first, and in what order?

Working through these in sequence stops you fixing the wrong thing, which is the most common way owners waste months on this.

  • Search your exact business name plus your town. Does the profile appear at all?
  • Open your Google Business Profile dashboard and look for a suspension notice.
  • Search your name with your address, then your phone number alone, to surface duplicate listings.
  • Compare your primary category against the primary category of the three businesses currently ranking.
  • Repeat your main service search from two or three separate locations across your service area.
  • Check the date of your most recent review. If it is months old, that alone can explain a slide.

Related questions

How long after verification before my business appears on Google Maps?

Once verification completes, the profile usually becomes visible within a few days. If two weeks pass and searching your exact business name still returns nothing, treat it as a fault rather than a delay and check your dashboard for a suspension notice.

Do I need a website to show up on Google Maps?

No. A verified profile can rank without one. But on-page signals account for roughly 19% of local pack weight in Whitespark's data, so a website that clearly describes your services and location strengthens a profile rather than being optional.

Can I pay Google to appear in the map pack?

No. The three map results are organic. Local Services Ads and search ads can appear above them but are labelled as ads and are a separate product. Anyone offering to buy you placement in the organic map pack is misdescribing what they sell.

Why can my customers see my business on Maps but I cannot?

Results are personalised to each searcher's location and history, so two people running an identical search in different places see different listings. Check from a different location, or ask someone inside your service area to search for you.

Does having two Google Business Profiles hurt my rankings?

Yes. Duplicate listings for the same business split your signals and can suppress each other, and Google's guidelines do not permit them. Find the duplicate and request its removal rather than leaving both live.
