How does a ChatGPT ad actually work for an HVAC company?
Short answer
Nothing like a keyword campaign. You give context hints describing the conversations where you belong, not exact-match keywords, and OpenAI runs a relevance-weighted second-price auction. HVAC sits inside the supported local services category in every market we work in, so for once the answer is yes. The catch is who sees the ads.
Key points
OpenAI names local services among the consumer categories supported in the early phases, which covers an HVAC contractor, and self-service is available in every market we work in.
Targeting is by context hints at ad group level describing conversations, topics or keywords. OpenAI states these are not exact-match keywords and do not guarantee delivery.
Ads are not shown to users on Plus, Pro or any Business plan, nor to accounts identified as under 18.
Selection runs through a relevance-weighted, second-price auction, with a maximum bid set at ad group level.
For CPC campaigns OpenAI recommends starting with a maximum bid of 3 to 5 US dollars per click.
Is an HVAC company actually eligible, in every market?
Yes, and this is the first trade in this series where that sentence is not followed by a qualification.
OpenAI's ad policies state that during the early phases advertising is focused on a limited set of consumer categories including household and consumer goods, local services, travel and entertainment, and digital products and education. An HVAC contractor is a local service. There is no healthcare restriction to clear, no category to wait for, and no US-only limit on the category.
Self-service through Ads Manager is available in the United States, the United Kingdom, Canada, Australia, New Zealand and the United Arab Emirates among many others, with the condition that the legal entity advertising and being billed is based in a listed country.
So the useful question for a contractor is not whether this is open. It is how it works, because it does not work like the Google Ads account you already run. How we would approach the account itself, including the seasonal timing argument, is on ChatGPT Ads for HVAC companies.
Why is a ChatGPT ad not a keyword campaign for a contractor?
Because there is no keyword list, and a contractor who tries to rebuild one will fight the system rather than use it.
At the ad group level, advertisers provide what OpenAI calls context hints: descriptions of the conversations, topics or keywords where their products or services may be relevant. OpenAI is explicit that these hints help guide ad matching, but that they are not exact-match keywords and do not guarantee delivery in specific conversations.
The selection system weighs several things together, including the context and intent of the current conversation, the ad's landing page, its title and copy, those context hints, and, where ads personalization is enabled, signals from the user's broader ChatGPT experience.
Notice that the landing page is an input to matching rather than just a destination. For an HVAC company that makes the page behind the ad part of the targeting, which is an argument for pointing ads at a page that describes the job properly rather than at a homepage. How to write that page, including what the law requires you to say about price, is in how an HVAC company should answer how much does it cost.
Who actually sees an HVAC ad on ChatGPT?
A narrower group than most contractors assume, and the exclusion cuts differently depending on whether you are chasing homeowners or commercial contracts.
OpenAI states that it does not show ads to users on Plus, Pro or any Business plan, nor to any accounts identified as belonging to users under 18, based on account-level age information and age prediction where available.
For residential work that is probably tolerable. A homeowner whose boiler has failed is as likely to be on the free tier as any other plan, and the emergency does not care what somebody subscribes to.
For commercial HVAC it is a real constraint and worth saying plainly. The facilities manager, the building services engineer and the procurement lead are exactly the sort of people whose employer has put them on a Business plan. A campaign built to win commercial maintenance contracts is targeting a population that has been substantially removed from the audience.
That alone should shape how a contractor splits the budget. Residential repair and installation are the viable half of this channel today.
What does an HVAC ad consist of?
Six components, and one of them catches contractors out because Google Search Ads never asked for it.
Advertiser name, which should be the trading name customers recognise.
Favicon, meaning your logo, so the site needs one that renders at small sizes.
Title, the headline.
Copy, the description.
Landing page, which is also an input to ad matching rather than only a destination.
Image asset, the creative. This is the one to plan for, since a text-only Google Ads operation will not have suitable photography sitting ready.
How is it priced, and what should an HVAC contractor bid?
Three buying models and a published starting point, which is unusually helpful for a channel this new.
You can buy on Views for impression-based delivery, Clicks to optimise for traffic, or Conversions to optimise toward a supported conversion event. OpenAI notes that conversion-optimised campaigns with click billing charge for valid clicks rather than for conversions.
A maximum bid is set at ad group level, a maximum CPM for Reach campaigns or a maximum CPC for Clicks campaigns, and for CPC campaigns OpenAI recommends starting with a maximum bid of 3 to 5 US dollars per click. Ads Manager also gives bid-strength guidance on whether a bid is likely to be competitive or may limit delivery.
Selection runs through a relevance-weighted, second-price auction. The relevance weighting is the part a contractor should act on: a better-matched ad with a tighter landing page can win against a higher bid, which is the opposite of how a thin account behaves on a pure price auction.
For context, that suggested starting range sits well below what emergency HVAC keywords cost on Google in most competitive markets. That is what an immature channel looks like, and it is the argument for testing now rather than in two years.
What should an HVAC contractor watch in the reporting?
One thing in particular, because it will otherwise produce a confident and wrong conclusion in the first week.
Ads Manager Beta reports impressions, clicks, spend, click-through rate, average CPC, average CPM and conversions. OpenAI warns that impressions, clicks and CTR can appear within minutes, but that spend reporting can take longer, and that a displayed spend of zero does not necessarily mean no charges have accrued.
A contractor testing a small budget over a weekend, seeing clicks and no spend, and concluding the channel is free or broken, is the predictable failure here. Wait for spend to settle before drawing any conclusion about cost per lead.
Static tracking parameters such as UTMs persist on ad clicks, so put them on the landing page URLs from the first campaign and read the results in the analytics you already trust rather than only in Ads Manager.

What should an HVAC contractor have ready before starting?
Less than for a Google Ads launch, but the items are different ones.
A logo that renders as a favicon, and at least a few usable photographs for the image asset.
A landing page that describes the specific job rather than the whole business, since the page feeds matching as well as conversion.
Credentials maintained, since OpenAI requires advertisers promoting services that need registrations or licences to hold them.
UTM parameters on every destination URL from day one.
A budget you are willing to lose while spend reporting catches up, and a decision not to judge the test in the first week.
A residential focus first, given the Business plan exclusion, with commercial revisited if that changes.
Related questions
Can an HVAC company advertise on ChatGPT outside the United States?
Yes. The healthcare restriction that limits most of our clients to the US does not apply, because HVAC falls under local services, one of the consumer categories OpenAI supports in the early phases. Self-service is available in the UK, Canada, Australia, New Zealand and the UAE among many others.
Do we build a keyword list for an HVAC ChatGPT campaign?
No. You provide context hints at ad group level describing the conversations, topics or keywords where you are relevant. OpenAI states these are not exact-match keywords and do not guarantee delivery, so they steer matching rather than buying a term.
Will commercial HVAC buyers see our ads?
Many will not. Ads are not shown to users on Plus, Pro or any Business plan, and facilities and procurement staff are exactly the people an employer is likely to have on a Business plan. Treat residential repair and installation as the viable half of this channel for now.
What should we bid on an HVAC click?
OpenAI recommends starting at a maximum of 3 to 5 US dollars per click for CPC campaigns, with bid-strength guidance in Ads Manager indicating whether a bid may limit delivery. The auction is relevance-weighted and second price, so match quality can beat a higher bid.
Our HVAC campaign shows zero spend after two days of clicks. Is it free?
No. OpenAI states that impressions, clicks and CTR can appear within minutes while spend reporting takes longer, and that a displayed spend of zero does not necessarily mean no charges have accrued. Wait for spend to settle before working out a cost per lead.
