Why does Google screen HVAC companies harder than other trades?

Short answer

Because Google treats HVAC as an urgent category. Its own explanation is that consumers often call HVAC professionals for time-sensitive needs such as a heater broken in freezing temperatures, so HVAC firms undergo an additional level of screening that includes service professional background checks, on top of the business and owner checks other trades face.

Key points

  • HVAC is named an urgent category, which triggers an additional level of screening beyond the standard home services set.
  • The extra step is a service professional background check, reaching the individuals sent to a property rather than only the business.
  • HVAC carries general and professional liability insurance plus state-level business and owner licences.
  • Unlike health care categories, HVAC can use pre-badge ads and start receiving leads while finishing onboarding.
  • The product runs in eleven countries, excluding Australia, New Zealand and the United Arab Emirates.

Is HVAC screened differently from other trades?

Yes, and Google says so directly rather than leaving it to be inferred.

Local Services Ads is a separate product from Google Ads. It sells leads rather than clicks, requires a verified Google Business Profile, and admits businesses by category only after screening. HVAC, listed as heating or air conditioning, is one of those categories.

It is also singled out. Google describes HVAC as an urgent category because consumers often call HVAC professionals for time-sensitive, urgent needs, such as a heater that is broken in freezing temperatures, and states that for that reason HVAC professionals undergo an additional level of screening, which includes service professional background checks.

So there are three background checks rather than two: the business, the owner, and the service professionals. The comparison with paid search is on Google Search Ads for HVAC companies.

What does a service professional background check mean for an HVAC firm?

It reaches the people you send, not just the entity you own, and that is the practical difference from every other trade category.

A business check and an owner check can be satisfied with paperwork held at head office. A service professional check concerns the individuals who turn up at the property, which makes it an operational matter rather than an administrative one.

The consequences follow from how HVAC firms actually staff. Subcontracted engineers, seasonal hires taken on for a cold snap, and a van rota that changes weekly are all normal in this trade and none of them fit neatly into a static verification list.

The planning point is simple. Work out who counts as a service professional for your business before you begin, rather than discovering partway through onboarding that the answer includes six people you took on last November.

Why the urgency logic cuts both ways for HVAC

The reason for the extra screening is also the reason the product suits this trade better than most.

Google's stated logic is about the emergency call, and an emergency call is the best lead an HVAC company can get. The customer has a specific failure, a short timeframe and limited appetite for comparison shopping. That is exactly the moment a prominent unit with a verification badge does its work.

The same urgency is why the bar is higher. Someone with no heat in February is choosing quickly and letting a stranger into the house at short notice, with less time to check anybody. Google is doing the checking that the customer has skipped.

Read that way the additional screening is the product rather than an obstacle to it. A trade where anyone can appear would not be worth the premium placement, and every competitor faces the same third check.

What can an HVAC company do that a dental practice cannot?

Start earning while the paperwork finishes, which is a genuine advantage of sitting in home services rather than health care.

Google offers pre-badge ads, letting a business receive leads after passing preliminary checks while completing the remaining onboarding. They are unavailable for health care verticals, and also for garage door services and locksmiths, but they are available to HVAC.

The requirements to go live pre-badge are a licence or business registration, acknowledgement that you hold the appropriate business licences, reviews subject to category requirements, and completed billing setup with a budget.

There is a cost to it. Google places pre-badge listings below providers who have completed all onboarding and obtained the badge. So it is a way of starting rather than a way of competing, and the full checks remain the goal.

What does an HVAC company need to have ready?

Three checks, two insurances and two licences, and it is worth assembling them in that order.

The background checks cover the business, the owner and the service professionals. The insurances are general liability and professional liability. The licences are a business licence and an owner licence, both at state level in the United States.

Licence details are not only a screening matter for this trade, because in several markets they have to appear in the advertising itself. We covered where they belong in does your HVAC licence number belong on your profile.

Add the prerequisite that applies to everyone: a public, verified Google Business Profile. If the profile is unverified or suspended, none of the rest matters yet.

How does seasonality work when you pay per lead?

Differently from paid search, and mostly in your favour.

On a cost-per-click product an out-of-season campaign burns budget on people who are researching rather than buying. On a cost-per-lead product you pay when someone calls or messages, so quiet weeks are cheap by construction.

What the season changes is the auction. Your bid is a maximum you will pay for a lead, and in a cold snap every competitor wants the same leads, so the price moves. Budget pacing matters more in the spike than it does in the lull.

The ranking factors reward preparation rather than reaction. Rating, review count, average response time, image quality and the checks you have completed are all things built over months and cashed in during a fortnight, which is the same argument we made in when should an HVAC company do the local SEO work for a seasonal spike.

One trap for firms with more than one depot: where multiple locations serve the same geographic area, Local Services shows only the highest ranking ad, so branches compete for a single slot rather than stacking.

Where can an HVAC company not use this?

In three of the four markets this agency sells into, which needs saying before anyone budgets for it.

Local Services Ads runs in Austria, Belgium, Canada, France, Germany, Ireland, Italy, Spain, Switzerland, the United Kingdom and the United States. Australia, New Zealand and the United Arab Emirates are not on the list.

The category list and the state-level licence requirements we verified are the United States version, so a firm in the UK or Ireland should confirm the local document set rather than assume the American one carries over.

One naming point, because most published advice on this is out of date. Google now issues a single Google Verified badge rather than the former Google Guaranteed and Google Screened split, and the Money Back Guarantee attached to the old guarantee badge has been discontinued, covering only services booked before 7 December 2025. An agency offering to make you Google Guaranteed is describing a badge that no longer exists.

Related questions

Why does Google screen HVAC companies more than other trades?

Because it classes HVAC as an urgent category, on the basis that consumers often call for time-sensitive needs such as a heater broken in freezing temperatures. That triggers an additional level of screening including service professional background checks, so there are three checks rather than two.

What is a service professional background check for an HVAC firm?

A check on the individuals your business sends to a property, rather than only on the business and its owner. For an HVAC firm using subcontractors or seasonal engineers, it turns onboarding into an operational question about who counts as a service professional before you apply.

Can an HVAC company run ads before screening finishes?

Yes, through pre-badge ads, which are available to HVAC although not to health care verticals, garage door services or locksmiths. You need a licence or business registration, reviews subject to category rules and billing set up. Pre-badge listings rank below fully badged providers.

Does paying per lead help with HVAC seasonality?

Yes, because quiet periods cost little by construction: you pay when someone calls or messages rather than when they click. What changes in a cold snap is the auction price, since every competitor wants the same leads, so pacing matters more in the spike than the lull.

Can an HVAC company in Dubai or Australia use Local Services Ads?

No. The product operates in eleven countries and neither the United Arab Emirates, Australia nor New Zealand is among them. Paid search remains the option in those markets.
