Why is pest control screened differently from HVAC for Local Services Ads?

Short answer

Because Google classes HVAC as an urgent category and pest control not. HVAC firms take a service professional background check covering the individuals sent to a property. Pest control takes a business representative check instead, alongside business and owner checks, with general and professional liability insurance and state-level business and owner licences.

Key points

  • Pest control services is a Local Services Ads category, sitting in home services alongside HVAC but screened differently.
  • The checks are business, owner and business representative, with several marked as applying to select users only.
  • There is no service professional check, so the individuals sent to a property are not separately verified.
  • Pest control can use pre-badge ads and booking leads, both of which are closed to health care categories.
  • Where several locations serve the same area, Local Services shows only the highest ranking ad.

Are pest control and HVAC screened the same way?

No, and the difference is instructive about how Google thinks about this trade.

Local Services Ads is a separate product from Google Ads, selling leads rather than clicks and admitting businesses by category after screening. Pest control services and HVAC are both listed, and both sit in home services rather than health care.

But the checks differ. HVAC takes a business check, an owner check and a service professional check. Pest control takes a business check, an owner check and a business representative check, several of them marked as applying to select users only.

Both carry general and professional liability insurance and both need state-level business and owner licences. The third check is the variable. The paid search position for this trade is on Google Search Ads for pest control companies.

What is a business representative check for a pest control firm?

It verifies a person who stands for the company, rather than each person the company sends out.

A service professional check, which HVAC gets, reaches the technicians who arrive at the property. A business representative check reaches whoever is nominated to represent the business. One scales with your van rota, the other does not.

For a pest control operator that is materially easier onboarding. A firm running eight technicians across a county is verifying a representative, not eight individuals, and the seasonal hire taken on for a wasp summer does not add a verification step.

It is worth reading the select users only marking honestly. Google applies some of these checks to a subset rather than universally, so the set you are asked for may be shorter than the published list. Prepare for the full set and be pleased if it is less.

Why does Google treat the two trades differently?

Our reading, and we are labelling it as a reading because Google explains the HVAC side and not the pest control side.

Google does give its reason for HVAC: consumers often call HVAC professionals for time-sensitive, urgent needs such as a heater broken in freezing temperatures, and for that reason HVAC professionals undergo an additional level of screening. Urgency is the stated trigger.

Pest control has urgency too, but of a different shape. A wasp nest is a same-week problem rather than a same-night one, and the customer is rarely making a decision in the dark with no heating. There is more room to choose.

Whether that is the actual reasoning we cannot say. What matters commercially is the consequence: a lighter onboarding for pest control, and a badge that says rather less about the individual who arrives than the HVAC equivalent does. If your technicians are certified, the profile is where that has to be said, because the screening will not say it for you.

What does a pest control company need to pass?

Three checks, two insurances, two licences and a verified profile.

The checks cover the business, the owner and a business representative. The insurances are general liability and professional liability. The licences are a business licence and an owner licence, both at state level in the United States. And every advertiser needs a public, verified Google Business Profile before any of it counts.

Nothing in that list touches what the advertising may say, which is the gap worth noticing. Passing Google's screening has no bearing on the pesticide claim rules, and those carry a penalty per violation. We set out what may and may not be said in can you advertise a pest treatment as safe.

That matters here because the listing still contains text. The services list and business bio are what Google matches on for relevance, and they are public advertising like anything else.

The multi-region trap for a pest control company

This one catches this trade harder than any other we work with.

Google states that where a business has multiple locations serving the same geographic area, Local Services shows only the highest ranking ad in response to a query. Branches do not stack. They compete for one slot.

Pest control is unusually exposed to that because coverage is the business model. Operators routinely run several registered addresses across a county or a metro area precisely to look local everywhere, and this product collapses that strategy back into a single listing per area.

The answer is not more locations, it is a better single listing for each genuinely distinct area, which is the same conclusion we reached about profiles in how should a pest control company cover multiple regions on one Google profile.

What can a pest control company do that a clinic cannot?

Two useful things, both closed to the health care categories.

It can run pre-badge ads, receiving leads after preliminary checks while completing the rest of onboarding. The requirements are a licence or business registration, acknowledgement of holding the appropriate licences, reviews subject to category requirements, and billing set up with a budget. Pre-badge listings rank below fully badged providers, so it is a way of starting rather than competing.

It can also take booking leads, which health care verticals cannot. Google names enabling message and booking leads as increasing the likelihood of a lead, especially during nights and weekends when you cannot answer the phone.

For a trade where a customer discovers the problem at an inconvenient hour and wants it dealt with, that second one is worth switching on deliberately rather than leaving at whatever the default is.

Where can a pest control company not use this?

In three of the four markets this agency works in, which settles the question before the rest of it matters.

Local Services Ads runs in Austria, Belgium, Canada, France, Germany, Ireland, Italy, Spain, Switzerland, the United Kingdom and the United States. Australia, New Zealand and the United Arab Emirates are not included.

The category list and the state-level licence structure we verified are the United States version. An operator in the UK or Ireland should confirm the local category name and document set rather than assuming the American one applies.

One naming correction, since most published material is behind. Google now uses a single Google Verified badge in place of the former Google Guaranteed and Google Screened split, and the Money Back Guarantee attached to the old badge has been discontinued, covering services booked before 7 December 2025 only.

Related questions

Is pest control screened the same as HVAC for Local Services Ads?

No. Both are home services categories with business and owner checks, general and professional liability insurance and state-level licences, but the third check differs. HVAC takes a service professional check covering technicians sent out; pest control takes a business representative check instead.

Why does HVAC get the heavier check?

Google states that HVAC is an urgent category because consumers often call for time-sensitive needs such as a heater broken in freezing temperatures, which triggers an additional level of screening. It gives no equivalent explanation for pest control, so the comparison is our reading rather than Google's.

Does passing Google's screening cover the pesticide claim rules?

No. Screening looks at licences, insurance and identity, not at what the advertising says. The pesticide claim restrictions apply to the services list and business bio exactly as they apply anywhere else, and they carry a penalty per violation.

Can a pest control company with several branches get several listings?

Not in the same area. Where multiple locations serve the same geographic area, Local Services shows only the highest ranking ad, so branches compete for one slot rather than stacking. Build one strong listing per genuinely distinct area instead.

Can customers book a pest control job from the listing?

Yes. Booking leads are available to pest control, unlike the health care categories, and Google names enabling booking and message leads as increasing lead likelihood, particularly at nights and weekends. Worth switching on deliberately for a trade where problems surface at awkward hours.
