Google Business Profile for physiotherapy clinics.
A physiotherapy Google Business Profile has to solve a problem most local listings do not: patients search by condition rather than by profession, and the word clinics most want to use to describe their expertise is prohibited in Australia and permitted in New Zealand. Getting the profile right means describing what you treat precisely, without claiming a status the profession does not grant you.
Specialist means opposite things on each side of the Tasman
The Physiotherapy Board of Australia states there is no specialist registration for physiotherapy, and names specialises in as advertising likely to mislead. Its own worked example of unacceptable advertising is a practitioner described as a specialist sports physiotherapist.
New Zealand is the mirror image. Physiotherapy Specialist is a registered scope of practice there, which is exactly the status Australia does not have.
So the same sentence on the same website is a selling point in one market and a regulatory problem in the other. Section 118(2) of the National Law also criminalises using a specialty word about another person, and unlike section 133 it carries no publisher defence.
The way through is not to write blandly. It is to describe what you treat and who you treat, in the words patients use, rather than claiming a title. Post-operative knee rehabilitation is more searchable than specialist, more honest, and gives Google something concrete to match.
Patients search the condition, not the profession
Most physiotherapy demand does not arrive through physio near me. It arrives through sciatica, rotator cuff, plantar fasciitis, vestibular symptoms and post-operative recovery, often before the person has decided a physiotherapist is who they need.
That makes the services list the most important field on the profile. A profile listing physiotherapy once is invisible to almost all of that demand. A profile listing the conditions and programmes you actually run is eligible for it.
It also means the clinic that names fewer things, more specifically, usually outperforms the one that lists everything. Specificity is what gets matched.
Offers need their terms in the same place
A first consultation promotion is one of the most common things a clinic puts on a profile, and one of the easiest ways to breach the rules without noticing.
National Law section 133 makes it an offence to advertise a regulated health service offering a gift, discount or other inducement unless the advertisement also states the terms and conditions of that offer. On a profile post or a description, that means the terms have to appear in the same place as the offer, not on a page somewhere else.
In New Zealand there is a further contractual layer: ACC forbids a clinic from advertising services at a new site until a Conformity Assessment Body has certified it, and requires charges to be clearly displayed and made known before treatment.
What we do on a physiotherapy profile
- Wording checked against the specialist rule for the market you practise in
- Services list rebuilt around conditions and programmes rather than the word physiotherapy
- Any offer or promotion checked for the section 133 terms requirement
- Categories chosen against the case mix you want, not the broadest available
- Review approach built to generate reviews that name the condition treated
- Hours, booking links and attributes matched to how the clinic actually runs
- Monthly reporting on enquiries by condition, so you can see which programmes are earning
Questions
Can a physiotherapist say they specialise in something?
In Australia, no. The Physiotherapy Board states there is no specialist registration for physiotherapy and names specialises in as likely to mislead. In New Zealand, Physiotherapy Specialist is a registered scope, so the position is the opposite. The market decides the answer.
What should we write instead of specialist?
Describe the work. Post-operative knee rehabilitation, vestibular assessment, return-to-sport programmes. These are searchable, honest, and give a search engine something specific to match against a query.
Can we advertise a discounted first appointment?
In Australia, only if the advertisement also states the offer's terms and conditions, in the same place. Section 133 makes an inducement without its terms an offence.
Why does the services list matter so much for physio?
Because patients search the condition rather than the profession. A profile that lists physiotherapy once is not eligible for most of the demand in its own area.
