Google Business Profile for veterinary practices.
Almost every veterinary marketing guide tells practices to set Animal Hospital as their primary Google category, and states it as a rule rather than an option. In New South Wales and in the United Kingdom, that advice can put a practice in breach. The category is the strongest single ranking field on a Google Business Profile, so it has to be decided against your licence status before anything else is touched.
The category that needs a licence
New South Wales legislation names animal hospital as an unlawful representation unless the premises hold a veterinary hospital licence. The Australian Government's own licensing service states the licence is required specifically in order to advertise premises as an animal hospital.
The United Kingdom reaches the same place by a different route. The RCVS treats the words veterinary hospital as misleading unless the practice is Hospital accredited under the Practice Standards Scheme, and applies that whether or not the practice participates in the scheme at all. Its own guidance confirms a practice may be required to rebrand.
Against that, the prevailing marketing advice recommends the category unconditionally. So the most commonly repeated piece of veterinary SEO advice is, in two of the markets we work in, an instruction to make an unlawful representation.
Because the primary category decides which searches you are eligible for at all, this is not a footnote to fix later. It is the first decision, and it has to follow your licence rather than what ranks best.
Two very different search moments
Pet owners arrive through two doors. One is the 2am emergency, where the search is urgent, the filter is who is open, and the decision takes seconds. The other is the calm week when a family chooses a vet for a new puppy, which is researched, compared and weighted heavily on reviews.
The first wins you a single visit. The second wins you a pet's whole life of care, plus every other animal that household owns.
A profile built only for the emergency case loses the second. A profile built only for the calm case is invisible at 2am. Hours, emergency attributes, services and the review corpus all have to serve both.
Medicines advertising reaches further than most practices expect
The UK medicines regulator names the specific non-branded search terms that must not be used to trigger prescription-medicine advertising, which brings a practice's paid and organic search activity into scope rather than just its printed material.
It also takes a position that surprises most practices: a price list stops being a price list and becomes an unlawful advertisement the moment one product is styled more prominently than the rest.
That has a direct consequence for a Google Business Profile. Products, offers and posts that foreground a particular medicine are not neutral information, and should be handled as advertising from the start.
What we do on a veterinary profile
- Category checked against your licence and accreditation before anything else is changed
- Services built for both the emergency search and the choosing-a-vet search
- Hours and emergency attributes set so out-of-hours searches filter you in
- Review strategy aimed at reviews that name the service and the animal, because Google reads the words
- Any medicine, product or offer content checked against the advertising position in your market
- Profile monitored for user-suggested edits, which are common on veterinary listings
- Monthly reporting on calls, direction requests and new client enquiries
Questions
Can I use the Animal Hospital category on Google?
Only if you are entitled to represent your premises that way. New South Wales legislation makes animal hospital an unlawful representation without a veterinary hospital licence, and the RCVS treats veterinary hospital as misleading in the UK unless the practice is Hospital accredited under the Practice Standards Scheme.
Most marketing guides recommend that category. Are they wrong?
They are right that it is a strong category and wrong to state it unconditionally. The advice is usually written for a market where the word is unregulated, and repeated into markets where it is not.
Can a small independent practice compete with corporate groups?
Yes. Local search rewards proximity, category accuracy and genuine reviews, none of which scale with company size. A well-run single practice regularly outranks a group in its own neighbourhood.
Can we post about products and medicines on our profile?
Carefully. In the UK, a price list becomes an advertisement once one product is styled more prominently than the rest, and there are named non-branded search terms that must not be used to trigger prescription-medicine advertising. We treat product content as advertising from the outset.
