Answer engine optimisation for dental practices.
Dental AEO is the work of structuring a practice website so an AI answer can quote it directly. It matters more in dentistry than most trades because dental search splits into two markets, and the planned-treatment half is full of cost and process questions that AI systems answer rather than link.

Dentistry splits into two searches, and only one is quotable
Emergency dental search is short, local and urgent. Someone in pain types a symptom and picks from the map. An AI answer rarely changes that, because proximity and availability decide it.
Planned treatment behaves completely differently. Implants, orthodontics, veneers and whitening are researched for days under a treatment name, and the questions are what it involves, how long it lasts and what it costs. Those are exactly the questions an assistant answers in prose rather than by handing over ten links.
So the AEO opportunity in dentistry is concentrated in the half of your market with the highest treatment values, which is a better position than most industries are in.
What an AI answer can actually lift from a dental page
A direct answer placed near the top, in complete sentences, that survives being quoted with no surrounding context. A paragraph that begins with it depends is not quotable.
A heading that matches how a patient phrases the question rather than how a clinician would. How much does a dental implant cost is a real query. Implantology fee structures is not.
Something specific enough to be worth quoting. Ranges, timeframes, the number of visits, what is included. Generic reassurance is the most commonly published and least commonly quoted content in the sector.
We set out the structural version of this in the guide on how a dental practice should structure its website so AI Overviews can quote it.
Where dental AEO runs into the advertising rules
The temptation on a treatment page is to answer the cost question with a single attractive number. In most of our markets that becomes an advertised price, and an advertised price usually has to carry its terms.
Testimonials are the other trap. A quoted patient outcome is persuasive to a reader and prohibited in several of the markets we work in, so it cannot be the thing that makes your page quotable.
This is why dental AEO is not a generic content exercise. The most quotable version of a page and the compliant version of a page are not automatically the same page, and getting both takes someone who knows which rule applies where.
How we measure whether it worked
Google Search Console publishes a generative AI performance report, which is the only first-party view of whether AI surfaces are sending you anything. We use it rather than a third-party estimate.
Alongside it we track whether your pages are being quoted for the specific treatment questions we targeted, and whether the traffic that arrives converts differently from ordinary organic.
We report the ones that did not work too. A treatment page that never gets quoted is information about the query rather than a failure to hide.

Questions
Is AEO different from SEO for a dental practice?
It is a subset with a different target. SEO aims at a ranked link, AEO aims at being the text an answer quotes. The practical difference is structure: a page that ranks can meander, and a page that gets quoted has to answer in its first paragraph and survive being lifted out of context.
Which dental pages are worth optimising for AI answers?
The planned treatment pages, because that is where the questions are. Implants, orthodontics, veneers and whitening get researched for days under cost, duration and process questions. Emergency search is decided by proximity and availability, so an AI answer changes less.
Can we publish our prices to get quoted?
Often yes, but in most of our markets a published price becomes an advertised price, and an advertised offer usually has to carry its terms in the advertisement itself. We write the specific answer and keep the compliance around it, rather than choosing between the two.
How do we know if AI is sending us anything?
Google Search Console has a generative AI performance report, which is the only first-party measurement available. We set it up and read it monthly rather than quoting you a third-party estimate of AI traffic.
