Local SEO in New Zealand, for businesses with a regulator.
Local search works the same way here as anywhere. What differs is which words you are allowed to use, and which advertising products actually run in this country. Both catch out agencies working from overseas playbooks.
Local SEO in New Zealand means getting a business into the map results and the organic results for searches made near it, inside the advertising rules its profession works under. For regulated businesses here that means the Advertising Standards Authority codes, the relevant professional body, and the Privacy Act 2020, on top of the ordinary ranking work.
We measured New Zealand dental websites, and most failed
We audited New Zealand dental practice websites against five criteria drawn from the Dental Council’s advertising practice standard and the ASA therapeutic codes. 30 of 43 carried at least one issue. Unsubstantiated superlative claims were the most common at 47% of sites, 28% published a patient testimonial claiming a treatment outcome, and 21% used specialist terminology for an area with no recognised New Zealand scope of practice.
That last one is the New Zealand trap in miniature. The word is not banned, it is scope-dependent, and the scope differs by profession and by country. The full method and findings are published.
Two advertising products do not run here at all
Google’s Local Services Ads, the product that carries the Google Verified badge, operates in eleven countries: Austria, Belgium, Canada, France, Germany, Ireland, Italy, Spain, Switzerland, the United Kingdom and the United States. New Zealand is not among them.
ChatGPT Ads is available to New Zealand advertisers as a platform, but OpenAI’s ad policies state that ads for health services outside the United States are generally prohibited. So a New Zealand clinic can open an account and still not be able to run anything, which reads like a technical fault and is actually a refusal. A New Zealand trade business is in a different position, because local services is a supported category.
Why we will not build you thirty city pages
We tested 24 New Zealand city queries against Google Autocomplete. Only 5 returned any suggestion, and all 5 were the generic local seo [city] form. Every dental seo [city], dental marketing [city] and google business profile management [city] query returned nothing. The same test across Australian, UK and UAE cities returned suggestions for 17 of 24.
Autocomplete only surfaces queries above a popularity threshold, so this is evidence of thin demand rather than proof of none. Either way it does not support thirty near-identical pages, and thirty near-identical pages match Google’s own published definition of doorway pages. One country page and strong profile work per location is the honest answer.
The same word, two different answers
New Zealand is not a smaller Australia. Physiotherapy Specialist is a registered scope here and there is no specialist registration for physiotherapy in Australia at all. A trans-Tasman group running one set of copy across both markets is therefore wrong in one of them by default, and it is usually the Australian side that carries the penalty.
We cover what may be said profession by profession across the eight industries we work in, and what the work costs is published rather than quoted on request.
Common questions
Should a New Zealand business build a page for every city it serves?
Almost never. We tested 24 New Zealand city queries against Google Autocomplete. Only 5 returned suggestions, and all 5 were the generic local seo [city] form. Every dental seo [city] and google business profile management [city] query returned nothing, while the same test on Australian, UK and UAE cities returned suggestions for 17 of 24. Thirty near-identical city pages would also match Google's own definition of doorway pages.
Can a New Zealand clinic run Local Services Ads?
No. Google's Local Services Ads operate in eleven countries and New Zealand is not one of them. Any proposal offering to get a New Zealand business Google Verified through Local Services Ads is describing a product that does not run here.
Can a New Zealand clinic advertise on ChatGPT?
Not if it is a health service. OpenAI's ad policies state that ads for health services outside the United States are generally prohibited, and the categories it may approve case by case are a United States list. A New Zealand trade business such as HVAC or pest control is in a different position, because local services is a supported category.
Is specialist a safe word for a New Zealand physiotherapist?
In New Zealand, yes, where Physiotherapy Specialist is a registered scope of practice. In Australia it is not, because there is no specialist registration for physiotherapy and the Board names specialises in as advertising likely to mislead. The same sentence on the same website is fine in one market and a problem in the other, which is why we write copy per market rather than once.
What does the Privacy Act 2020 change for a clinic website?
It governs what you collect through the site and what you tell people about it, which is why a booking form or an enquiry form needs a privacy statement behind it. It sits alongside, not instead of, whatever your professional body says about patient information.
